California, here we come!

Missouri S&T will have three representatives at the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships next week in Walnut, Calif., a contingent led by indoor All-America performer Jordan Henry (pictured above).who enters the meet as the fifth-ranked pole vaulter in the nation with a top mark of 17 feet.

Henry will be joined by fellow pole vaulter Peter Hollenbeck, while Tamara McCaskill will represent the women's team in California. Hollenbeck cleared 16-3 1/2 this season and McCaskill had a top mark of 5-7 in the high jump. All three competitors will be in action Saturday, May 24.

The M-Club at Missouri S&T held its annual awards banquet last week and two of the school's most celebrated student-athletes were named as the recipients of the Gale Bullman Awards.

Ashton Gronewold, who set numerous records during his four-year, All-America career on the football team and Kandi Wieberg, who did likewise for the softball team for the past four seasons, earned the top awards at the event held at the Havener Center on campus.

The "Coach of the Year" awards were given to two head coaches who led their respective teams to unprecedented heights in the 2007-08 season. Alan Eads led the Lady Miner basketball team to a school record 24 wins and a berth in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division II Tournament, while Doug Grooms led the S&T swimming team to a national runner-up finish at the NCAA Division II Championships in March.

A total of 17 most valuable player awards were also presented at the banquet. (Story)

The Miner baseball team ended its season on a down note May 4 as Southern Illinois Edwardsville handed it a 20-8 loss to close the year. Brandon Cogan had two hits and three runs batted in for S&T in the contest. The Miners won one of the four games in the season-ending series, taking a come-from-behind 11-10 decision in Saturday's second game.

For the second year in a row, the Great Lakes Valley Conference's "Player of the Year" hails from Missouri S&T. Third baseman Kelsey Musselman, who leads the league in hitting, slugging and home runs, was named as the league's top player for the 2008 season. Musselman was one of three first team selections to the All-GLVC team along with second baseman Kandi Wieberg and outfielder Emily Tucker; pitcher Jen O'Hara was selected to the All-GLVC third team.

Unfortunately for Missouri S&T, its stay at the GLVC Tournament was a short one as it was eliminated on the first day with losses of 1-0 to Rockhurst and 10-4 to Lewis. Ashley Wallingford gave up just five hits in the Rockhurst contest, but S&T managed only three itself. Against Lewis, the Lady Miners grabbed a quick 2-0 lead, only to see the Flyers score four in the third to go up for good. Musselman belted her 14th home run of the season, breaking the S&T single season mark, in the contest. The Lady Miners saw their season come to an end with a record of 26-21.
