Awards at annual M-Club Banquet
The M-Club at Missouri S&T held its annual awards banquet Wednesday night and two of the school's most celebrated student-athletes were named as the recipients of the Gale Bullman Awards.
Ashton Gronewold (second from right), who set numerous records during his four-year, All-America career on the football team and Kandi Wieberg (second from left), who did likewise for the softball team for the past four seasons, earned the top awards at the event held at the Havener Center on campus.
The "Coach of the Year" awards were given to two head coaches who led their respective teams to unprecedented heights in the 2007-08 season. Division II Championships in March.

(Story)
Missouri S&T had five winning performances and secured two of the Great Lakes Valley Conference's top awards over the weekend at the GLVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Edwardsville, Ill. Two of the winners, Brandon Etzold and Leah Morehead, were named as co-recipients of the league's "Freshman of the Year" awards for their efforts, as Etzold won the 800-meters and Morehead led a 1-2-3 finish in the pole vault for the Lady Miners.
Jordan Henry won the men's pole vault while teammate Peter Hollenbeck reached the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard in the event to finish second. S&T's other wins came from Kal-El Waters-Jones in the triple jump and Joffroi Holcombe in the 10,000-meters. The Miners finished fourth in the team standings while the Lady Miners were sixth. The Miner baseball team ended its season on a down note Sunday as Southern Illinois Edwardsville handed it a 20-8 loss to close the year. Brandon Cogan had two hits and three runs batted in for S&T in Sunday's contest. The Miners won one of the four games in the season-ending series, taking a come-from-behind 11-10 decision in Saturday's second game.
For the second year in a row, the Great Lakes Valley Conference's "Player of the Year" hails from Missouri S&T. Third baseman Kelsey Musselman, who leads the league in hitting, slugging and home runs, was named Wednesday as the league's top player for the 2008 season. Musselman was one of three first team selections to the All-GLVC team along with second baseman Kandi Wieberg and outfielder Emily Tucker; pitcher Jen O'Hara was selected to the All-GLVC third team.
Unfortunately for Missouri S&T, its stay at the GLVC Tournament was a short one as it was eliminated Thursday afternoon with losses of 1-0 to Rockhurst and 10-4 to Lewis. Ashley Wallingford gave up just five hits in the Rockhurst contest, but S&T managed only three itself. Against Lewis, the Lady Miners grabbed a quick 2-0 lead, only to see the Flyers score four in the third to go up for good. Musselman belted her 14th home run of the season, breaking the S&T single season mark, in the contest. The Lady Miners saw their season come to an end with a record of 26-21.
